comcast

well, twice in the past week there has been something seriously wrong with comcast’s high speed internet access. here is what happened last week. I don’t know if it was the same thing last night, sounds like it. I could get an internet signal but no web pages were able to get through.

I guess it’s not too bad of service. These have been the only two problems in the 4 years or so I have had cable internet. Well, other than the whole installation mess, but from my experience, that happens to everyone

It was exactly this issue at my house in New Mexico last night. I know this , ’cause I got the mad phat Linux diagnosis tools at my command and stuff. It (this DNS breakage) has actually been a fairly serious issue here in NM for some time.

I’m going setup my own DNS cache at the house when I get some time. This will bypass their lameness.

If it happens again here is a tip I got from someone

If you are on Comcast, try resetting your DNS from automatic to the following.
    DNS 1: 4.2.2.1
    DNS 2: 4.2.2.2
Apparently they’ve gone to 2 DNS servers only, and didn’t bother to tell anyone. I made those changes in my local connection and haven’t been this fast in quite some time (with thanks to a friend for finding this info out from Comcast).

On the DNS issue: They’re still not sure what’s causing the nightly blackouts at Comcast, and Comcast is being extremely tight-lipped about it. Apparently, the servers have been having some soreness in their CPUs, but Comcast CIO Bryan Price said that they needed to learn how to serve DNS requests through the pain.
You can also try 4.2.2.3, 4.2.2.4, and 4.2.2.5 as well. They’re all owned by Level3.
