over the weekend, with the assistance of one Mr. john rossi, I acquired a new automobile. this is the fifth car i have had the pleasure to own in my lifetime. the first was the glorious 1983 tercel documented here. upon its demise, my parents reluctantly (hee hee) handed me the 1985 chevrolet celebrity . i got by for a few years on that car until the radiator broke and the engine siezed up. however before the chevy bit the dust, i had acquired a brown two toned vanagon. it was a nice vehicle with a few good times but it never quite lived up to expectations. the vanagon gave up and so did i. i was carless for 6 months or so. soon, another wonderful car came into my life, a 1983 saab 900s. oh what a little dream that car was. i’ve had the saab for almost five years. it has treated me well. good times, bad times.
the next car was acquired spring 2004. a frantic call from portland, rossi wanted to know if i was interested in buying a mercedes. he had recently acquired a second one, so he had a matching set. he thought i might enjoy the car as i had looked with envy at his mercedes on prior visits. i finally talked my self into the purchase. rossi got the car, checked it out and wasn’t too sure of tis state when he acquired the vehicle. he wanted to work on it for awhile. i had managed to push it out of my mind after a while.
move throughout the year that is 2004 and early 2005. i scan the classifieds and craigslist for diesels. nothing much showed up or it was more than i wanted to pay.
well, flash april 2005, john gives me a call or an email and asks if i’m still interested in owning such a fine automobile. i agreed that i should acquire such a fine automobile. i said i call him back when i though he should bring it down, the next weekend was much too busy. i got off the phone or the email and shortly realized that i could not wait that long. it had too be the following weekend, any thing else would have been torture.
i don’t know how many people i annoyed with my constant babbling about the car. i had definitely built it up in my mind. when the fateful friday arrived, i attended my bowling banquet in the evening and drove casually home. thoughts of mercedes dancing in my head.
i pull up the hill and around the bend. the majestic car comes into view, the anticipation pulls away from me, and tears well up in my blue eyes.
let’s just say i am quite pleased with the vehicle and have constant dreams about. here are three shots of the benz……..
a quick analysis shows us that none of the cars i have owned in my existance has been newer than an 85. i have increased the luxury of my northern european/german cars fetish with each purchase - vw, saab, mercedes - i’ll 40 in 5 years or so - perfect timing for my mid life- crisis porsche.
Beauty car. Here’s the one of the cars I pine for.
Ha! Crazy - I’ve been scoping these fine autos out for a few months now… I love how they’re a favorite in under-developed nations where the roads are bad and mechanics few because they were built to be pulled off to the side of the road and fixed with a few standard tools when trouble appears. What year and model is yours?
And what of the Slaab? Still running?
1983 300D turbo diesel, 318K
the slaab still lives on. it’s still a fine automobile. i’ve got to clean it up and sell it to pay for the mercedes.
how’s about a pic of that odometer for prosperities sake? is the slaab still counting backward?
my dream car. grocery gettin’ in style!
In my opinion the W123 Mercedes is one of the best cars ever produced. now you’re hooked, beef!
Cool. Diesel technology rules on high. I’ve always wanted to mad max a small mercedes diesel motor into an early 80’s nissan/toyota 4×4 pickup.
Is that a model number or the mileage? For a 20-year-old car, what’s on the odometer? Have you named it yet? Are you gonna name it?
tis the mileage. now an accompanying picture to record the historic event.

My Pontiac kicks ass, except for the tranny, brakes, broken door, and electric windows that do not work, otherwise, ONE FINE AUTOMOBILE
hmmm… i hear megan wants a new car to haul the pugs around in…
This one in Tacoma is awfully close to you guys… ’tis even a diesel
beef - thought i’d mention that mercedes offers these slick high mileage badges for your grill… you can download an application here. this thread has some pictures if you’re interested. you ought to be able to get the 250km and 500km badges for your car…
Wheeeee. Downloaded the form, filled it out, now I just have to take it to a dealer and have him sign off on it.
Rossi,
I saw a Unimong in the grocery store parking lot the other day. It was BA.
