i must thank mr. kirchmer for showing me the love. the following site has brought me endless amounts of joy in the past few months. hrad driving african soul, funk, and afrobeat dug from the depths of west africa. frank aka dj soulpusher followed his wife to africa in the not so distant past and went crate digging throughout west africa. nuf said. currently there are about 13-15 mp3 (60min-90min each) full of mind blowing african rhythms in all kinds of states of excitement.

he also documents some of his more hair raising experiences as he collects these valuable funk gems.

    hey Beef

Speaking of sanity…this report from Rio…

I´m listening right now to a 1970´s album from Tim Maia, one of the luminaries of Brasilian funk and soul. As a sidenote, I first heard of him on my first visit to Brasil in March 1998, during which he died. A few days later, Jorge Ben was playing a free concert on Botafogo Beach in Rio and sang his tribute song “Tim Maia” to the enormous, jubilant crowd.

I had bought a few albums of Tim Maia on that trip (you´ll find em in the collection), none of which I was super impressed with. This album I´m listening to right now – Racional Vol. 1 & 2 – is pretty sweet, and I think you should extend your web tendrils to see if you can find a vinyl copy. The music is really great (vol. 2 is superior, both are worth getting), and some of the songs have pretty righteous lyrics. Nevertheless, this album came from Tim Maia´s cult phase – the title is a reference to the Cultura Racional movement of Manuel Jacinto Coelho, in which UFOs play a key part. So there´s definitely a stream of this stuff running through the lyrics. Only one song is in English, though, so you can probably get by without feeling like your trying to be converted.

But, hey, if I´m gonna vote for Kucinich in the primaries, I don´t see why I shouldn´t enjoy a little of Tim Maia´s Racional Phase.

    peace
