That is all for the moment. We’ll see what I can make it to. Most of them would be nice but Otto needs a good role model. wheeee!
Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 blasted through town June 28th, The usually crowd - Jason, Pease, and a few Feldman’s - good times. Seun definitely has his father’s mannerisms and energy. A smaller venue might have been more fun - maybe the showbox instead of the moore - but still excellent. Lots of dancing and no encore. But the crowd was hooting and hollering for a good 15 minutes after the show trying to get them back on. But then we finally see the band memberes file up the aisles on the side- they wouldn;t be coming back.
After 4+ years of stewardship of a Mr. J Hodin’s most excellent record collection. It was time to bid farewell. The records will enjoy and equally good stay at Terry and Heike’s.
a few things i’m looking at going to see this winter/fall - slow going over the holidays so i decided to make an effort to figure out what is coming up in the near future. most these bands will probably have shows in your area. if you can - i would check them out.
It’s always wise to see the skerik/dillon/houser explosion over the holidays. The Dead Kenny G’s brought out the stars for a fun night at the tractor. The first was full of wackiness all over but the fun got started after the break. Maurice Caldwell Jr. stepped on stage for a funky must be santa with a little help from Chris Littlefield. Next, Gino from kultur schock whooped it up with some fantastic eastern european/middle eastern beats. Leif joined the stage shortly after from a west african melody go round, quite fantastic, probably the best part of the night for me. Followed up with some deep organ grooves from an organ player I didn’t recognize. Throw a little more Chris Littlefield throughout the whole second set. The night ended with horns blowing and the drums pounding.
i must thank mr. kirchmer for showing me the love. the following site has brought me endless amounts of joy in the past few months. hrad driving african soul, funk, and afrobeat dug from the depths of west africa. frank aka dj soulpusher followed his wife to africa in the not so distant past and went crate digging throughout west africa. nuf said. currently there are about 13-15 mp3 (60min-90min each) full of mind blowing african rhythms in all kinds of states of excitement.
he also documents some of his more hair raising experiences as he collects these valuable funk gems.
went to the vera project this evening and saw dan deacon. quite the entertaining show. part monologue part dance party usa part birthday party. lots of singing along to the pulsing beat. the highlight of the evening had to be “the gauntlet.” At least 100 people were in the room. His first instructions were for everyone to spread out in a big circle in the room. a short pause and then he voices his disapproval of the previous plan. He commands the doors to open and for us all to form two lines facing each other. The construction of the dance “gauntlet” has begun. the beat begans to throb and the front end of “the gauntlet” peels off and dances through the house that dance built. The song plays out as the last of the original “gauntlet” collapses and flips with glee through the welcoming arms. good times.
if you get a chance, you should see him once. he travels a bunch and is from baltimore.
another fine record label, light in the attic. they are based in seattle. i’ve picked up many of their fine recordings. mostly reissues from the 70s, focusing on funk, soul, and general goodness.
here is a betty davis track from their most recent reissues. she makes reason #55 why if i had a time machine, the early 70s would be the place to go.
the following are examples of 5 wonderful albums i purchased this year. the links go to the album they are from. lots of great music out there - find it.
A new mashup from dj bc. In the past, he’s done fine work with the beatles and the beastie boys to create the beastles. Thos etracks are a little bit hard to find these days.
His most recent one is the wu-tang clan and various jazz artists from the new orleans area, called wu orleans. Mmmmmmm, there are some smoking hot tracks on there. The strength of the disc seems to lie in the front end with tracks 1-5. Number 10 is also pretty nice.
New favorite label time. I’ve enjoyed Ubiquity for a good while now. So, it’s time to profess my love for it to the masses. The label consists of a variety of music that falls into the hip-hop, funk, soul, and world categories. Lots of horns, lots of funky rhythms.
Artists that I have purchased and enjoy on a regular basis:
Breakestra
Greyboy
Greyboy Allstars
NOMO
Nostalgia 77
Ohmega Watts
Quantic
Darando
Pharoahs
I also own about half the samplers put out on this page and on that page.
The spring has been slow for shows. Look here for proof. Mostly, there wasn’t anything that i wanted to see, mostly. But things changed as of last night, a guaranteed good time, every monday, has started up again. Das Rut has been resurrected at the High Dive. Not that they went anywhere but I don’t recall seeing many bookings over the last year. They all perform incredibly and the “band” is not really a band but a gathering of good times. They were a staple in the last neighborhood I lived in, the Ravenna/Roosevelt area. Every Thursday they would lay down the funk at the Scarlet Tree. A nice place to have breakfast would transform to party central as they threw down increasingly funky licks with horns dancing, keyboards singing, and sweet, sweet Reggie Watts.
Mmmmmm, how i love the funk. Give me an organ and some horns and good times will be had by all. I checked the show out last night, hoping to get some good visits in before the monday night blows up. It is not a matter of if, but when, monday night will be the highlight of everyone’s week. I told myself, “well, I’ll just go and then leave at setbreak.” But the sweet, sweet rhythms wouldn’t let me go. PK’s bass, the light tap of the organ, reggie voice resonating through walls, the synchnopated thunder of the kit, thaddeus running me through the streets of funkytown, and the horn calling me to the promised land. Work would still be there if I went home at 11.30 or 2. Wise choice grasshopper. I’ll return, at least for the next few weeks on a regular basis and then maybe space it out to once or twice a month.
