wordpress 2.6

After 2 years of ignoring all WordPress releases that have come out, I got adventurous and decided to upgrade from 2.0 -> 2.6. For some reason it was easier this time. Not really much crapped out, I lost my category tags for a while. But this blog allowed me to manually put them back into the database. I’m sure there are some nifty things I’ve been missing out on but nothing I can see right off the bat.

Anyway, if something screwy happens whil you are looking at the site, leave me a comment. I need the frustration!

farecast

They’ve had a couple of these sites in Europe (but of course I can not find them). But finally, another wonderful airfare tool, Farecast. It uses past info and a wonderful statistical model(or some fancy kind of math) to predict what the price of a flight is going to do. It was just released as Public Beta and is really only good if you live in Seattle or Boston right now. We’ll see how things progress. It made me finally get off my ass and buy my ticket to Albuquerque

make a big picture out of many small pictures using andreamosaic!

Here is an image of Tiberious from a party last year.

here is a zoomable link to the photomosaic of the same picture. It had about 5000 images to pick from, only repeating an image once if it fit well, 30 images wide, and about 25 images high.

props must also go out to the sweet flash zoomify tool.

I’ve been looking for something that would give me a better breakdown on the visitors to my lovely website. I signed up to get a beta version of measure map. It should be quite interesting when it arrives because it is specifically tailored to blog traffic.

However, when Google produces a new tool/toy, I feel the need to at least give it a spin. Google bought the company, Urchin Software, which creates the Analytics software to breakdown site traffic.

For me, it’s probably only going to provide me with more useless stats and entertainment. Or course I’m using the free version. I don’t have much need or desire to optimize my site traffic. It’s just fun to get a graphically organized display of the stats I look at from time to time.

This image is the base page. The four windows will be filled with joy when it picks up some site traffic. It said it would be about 12 hours before anything meaningful would appear. It should provide me with some entertainment in the morning.

IN the past, I’ve put up a few of the more interesting goolge map hacks that I’ve run across. Well, the NY Times has an article today.

And here is the link to the GoogleMapsMania which is trying to keep an up to date list of new applications that are sprouting up using Google Maps.

Gallery2

I’ve got my gallery set up using Gallery2 and the WPG2 plugin. It looks all right. My fixed width body makes things look weird. Two folders acroos is going to make for a funny looking page. I’ll have to try and modify the style sheet for the page, maybe shrink the text, etc. Good luck, Beef. I haven’t had much success with this in the past.

However, I may forgo the integration into the wordpress blog and just link directly to the stand alone Gallery 2.

For future reference, Beef’s Gallery can be found in the sidebar.

I just noticed this recently. When you pull this site up in IE, the sidebar gets listed below all of the posts. I’ll probably post a question on the Word Press support forums but if anyone knows what I need to tweak in my style sheet to fix this, it would be greatly appreciated. (But then again, what are you doing still using IE, you should be using firefox.)

wordpress 1.5.1

I tried upgrading to WordPress 1.5.1. Why? Because they said it was a good idea. Who are they? You know? To say the least, it was disastrous. The instructions made it seem relatively easy. I thought I had uploaded everything and then all I got was an error message when I went to my home page. Well, the one consolation prize was I had at least downloaded and saved everything on my server before. All I had to do was delete everything and upload it back to its original state. I’ll try again soon. For all I know, I was only one file away from having it right.

update sat 11pm i tries it again and it seems to be working like it is supposed to. i’ll hunt around and explore and hope things still work.

i realize that a good number of people already have one but for those who still need one – i’ve got 50 invites to gmail . leave a post and i will send you an invite. (you don’t need to put your email in the body of the post, i’ll be able to get it when you post. boy that sounds confusing but you will know what i am talking about when you see it.)
